About the Author
Louis P. Pojman (1935-2005) was Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, at the United States Military Academy and a Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge University. He received an M.A. and Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary/Columbia University. He was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Copenhagen and a Rockefeller Fellow at Hamburg University. He received his D.Phil. in Philosophy from Oxford University in 1997.His first position was at the University of Notre Dame, after which he taught at the University of Texas at Dallas. Later, at the University of Mississippi, he served for three years as Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion. In 1995, he became Professor of Philosophy at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He most recently was Visiting Professor at Brigham Young University in Utah and Visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, Oxford University. Pojman won several research and teaching awards, including the Burlington Northern Award for Outstanding Teaching and Scholarship (1988) and the Outstanding Scholar/Teacher in the Humanities at the University of Mississippi (1994). He wrote in the areas of philosophy of religion, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy and authored or edited more than 30 books and 100 articles. Louis Pojman passed away in 2005.

James Fieser is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Tennessee at Martin. He received his B.A. from Berea College and his M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy from Purdue University. He is author, co-author, or editor of ten textbooks, including SOCRATES TO SARTRE AND BEYOND (9/e 2011), ETHICAL THEORY: CLASSICAL AND CONTEMPORARY READINGS (6/e 2010), A HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY (2003), and MORAL PHILOSOPHY THROUGH THE AGES (2001). He has edited and annotated the ten-volume EARLY RESPONSES TO HUME (2/e 2005) and the five-volume SCOTTISH COMMON SENSE PHILOSOPHY (2000). He is founder and general editor of the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy website (http://www.iep.utm.edu).

I almost didn’t buy this book. I visited the authors website to get a better picture of him and was bombarded with a pop up and pictures of his biceps. As an engineer, I thought: “this guy can’t really be one of us” (but who knows? He seems to get readers). I read this books table of contents, and while all the topics are important to understand, they didn’t seem to justify the price of the book to me.So why did I buy it? I realized I had read a lot of professional software development books: on languages, coding style, design patterns, high level concepts, mindset, etc. But I had a blind spot: no books on software development social/soft skills. I searched for software development books on social skills and this one stuck out. There also doesn’t seem to be much competition (if you know of any other good ones, please let me know).So against all my instincts telling me “this guy is not really an engineer. He’s a marketing bro. How could he know what he’s talking about? How could this book apply to my life?” I decided to purchase the book. My next thought was shock: “WHAT? The delivery time is TWO WEEKS? It’s not prime!?”When the book finally arrived and I started reading it, it didn’t take me long to start making highlights, bookmarking sections, and writing notes. The book is good. He gives a lot of good advice in a wide variety of topics. The ones I found most useful were about career planning, networking, marketing, productivity, and mindset. He surprised me by offering advice I hadn’t heard before and can instantly put into practice. I would share them here, but he deserves the book sales.When you have a book with such a wide variety of topics, it’s inevitable that many readers will already have a good understanding of a few of those topics. For me it was personal finance, fitness, and diet. I didn’t think his chapter on dating added value either.His writing was simple and easy to understand, but not exactly spellbinding. He opens a lot of chapters with a single paragraph explaining why the subject is important and follows it by saying “now that I’ve convinced you this subject is important…” Most of the time, he didn’t. It felt cheesy. But his points are clear and he offers a lot of important questions to ask yourself.This book covers a lot of subjects at a high level with examples you can put to use right away. I think most readers will be able to take away a few things that they can apply to their own lives that over time will make a significant difference. What more can you ask for from a book?

This is a great book for software developers either mid-level or senior level. They help set goals beyond, "making a living" as a software developer, or getting a job. The book emphasizes a balance on being a successful software developer, but it's not for everyone. The book doesn't take into account kids or family. One of the authors claims is pocketing 70k from a 100k salary, by being frugal. Not a bad thing, but only really works if your single, and your already making a 100k. So don't use this book as a get rich thru coding practice.I do like the life-skills topics: investing in stock, real-estate, etc. Things that can be done with a family or "on the side" given a person's capital. The fitness section is really insightful, I doubt I'd be at John's level, but it does cover a lot that your physical education classes SHOULD have covered in high school and approaching it at a geek level.Lastly, the section on networking and marketing yourself is solid, but if you've got a good handle on Twitter, and LinkedIn this may seem a little redundant. Overall, a solid book for developers.

This is the book I wish I had when I started my career. I've been a software developer for 20+ years and I found things that I learned. Or rather, it reminded me of a few things I should've learned that I didn't yet put into practice. It's good to see so much useful marketing and career skills for software developers in one place.I can't fully recommend this to everyone. If you're above an intermediate level and you have a decent network, you might not pick up that much from this book - but then again, you wouldn't be shopping for this book. If I have one quibble, it's that I can't recommend his financial strategy - he's a follower of the "Rich Dad/Poor Dad" strategy of building real estate wealth, and whenever I hear of someone who earned a lot of money doing this, all I can think of is the phrase "survivorship bias" - the half-dozen friends I had who did this sort of thing all wound up barely breaking even and oddly, none of them ever wrote about their experience. Still, kudos to Mr. Sonmez for daring to stick his neck out when too many books aimed at starting developers skirt this important stuff entirely.

This book's first half was pretty good where it actually dealt with developer issues and career progression. The point where it really put me off was when John started talking about things like real estate investments. Real estate may have worked out well for the author, but by no means should people be taking out high leverage loans without understanding all the risks involved. The part that made me put the book down was when John recounted a story where he bought two properties sight unseen. Without further context, this decision is astoundingly reckless and a terrible habit to teach newbie investors.

This is the missing manual I've been looking for for a long time. Many times I thought I wish a book like this existed. Now it does. Well, sort of. Yes, it's a bit shallow, but it helps to develop the right mind set and direction.It took me a few weeks to find out I can download the digital version from the publisher's web site to read on any device. At first, I overlooked the piece of paper with the codes inside.

Awesome book! I follow John's YouTube channel and blog very closely, and after months of anticipation I finally bout the book and blitzed through it in a matter of days. Normally I read a book over the course of maybe a week or two, but I was so engaged with all of the great advice talked about throughout that I couldn't put the thing down! Highly recommend for any software developer, or honestly, anyone even interested in personal development that knows nothing about programming. I have a feeling that much of what is talked about in this book can be applicable to people in a variety of life situations and career paths / industries.

Must own. Very large/heavy book full of gorgeous photos that sometimes spread across both pages. The back of the book explains what every photo is, which keeps the photos the focus instead of having captions everywhere.But this isn't what I'd call a coffee table book/photobook. It isn't something I'd let guests pick up and flip through. I'd have to trust they wouldn't ruin it.The 'essays' by Powers are well-written and fun to read. The conversations/interviews with Wong Kar Wai are better and worth reading multiple times.You should own this if you love Wong Kar Wai. Would make a great gift.

This book would've provided much insight to my final assignment on WKW in Asian Cinema. Alas that was 10 years ago.John Powers interviewed WKW like Truffaut did Hitchcock, and you do learn a lot more behind-the-scene stories of how WKW, his then cinematographer Christopher Doyle, art director William Chang, survived the glory yet commercialised HK cinema. He also explained how the look of all his movies came to be.(My favourite anecdote will always be how Tony Leung was 'mislead' into a gay love making scene, and regretting not going 'all in' years later.)Definitely a revelation to how Wong Kar Wai became WKW.This is a text heavy book and not as picturesque as I imagined. It starts with Powers' own summary of the book, which spanned perhaps 30% of the book before getting into the actual interviews.Hence my slight annoyance when content repeats itself.

I'm about 20 pages in, and everything about this book is magnificent. High quality, over-sized, 2-page photo spreads of stills from films; a detailed bio; interviews with WKW, his wife, Chris Doyle (I'm expecting more form WKW's art director etc). Well-written, full of details, and contextual background as well as film critic appraisals. I am very satisfied with this book.

AMAZING Quality. Huge fan of Wai and if you are as well, this has to become apart of your collection! The vibrancy and pureness of the images are superb and read the entire book in one day. A must have for film lovers

This is a true gem. John Powers' interviews with Wong Kar Wai were so thorough. It's amazing to not only see the beautiful pictures but really sit down and read through it. Really gives you insight into WKW's thoughts and personal life.

About the Author
Matt Furey is the author of several best-selling books, including Combat Conditioning, 101 Ways to Magnetize Money, The Unbeatable Man and his latest, greatest book, Expect to Win Hate to Lose. When Matt was eight years old he began competing in swimming and wrestling and through dedicated practice became a champion in each. His prowess in wrestling, however, took center stage when he attracted the attention of Olympic Gold Medalist Dan Gable, the head coach at the University of Iowa, who guided the Iowa team to 15 NCAA team titles in 21 seasons. Being on the Iowa team was akin to being a member of an underground group of high-achievers where you gained secret access to the success principles, keys, strategies and tactics that most of humanity will never hear about. After winning a national title in college, Furey moved to California where he began studying various martial arts.
