Very enjoyable book. Informative and real. The author gets one thinking about things we take for granted and don't even realize how we are contributing to the destruction of our planet and all the life forms we share the planet with. A brave lady with a heart of gold wrote this book and I am thankful.

In the Pacific Ocean between America and Japan floats the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an area somewhere in size between the state of Texas and twice the size of the continental United States. Couple that with the fact that the average American generates between 88 and 120 pounds of plastic waste per year, and we begin to understand the problem as well as our responsibility to reduce the impact of plastic consumption. Even if you don’t feel it is your job to reduce plastic waste, learning of the lethal chemicals in plastic may help to change your thought process.Beth Terry has written an understandable and easy-to-read guide full of suggestions and tips on how each of us can begin to cut down on plastic use. When one begins to think of all the changes necessary to reduce our personal waste in pounds down to single digits, the task seems daunting. I began by recycling paper bags and refusing plastic (even for my veggies). It’s amazing how checkout clerks react…some grin, some agree, and some treat not putting your food in those easy to dispense sacks a major problem.The author understands that reducing your waste is not an overnight feat. It takes time, and she walks you through the different areas where you can personally make an impact. Personally, I have not achieved the level of success as Ms. Terry, but no matter. Regular referral to her book helps to identify the next area where I can eliminate plastic, and I feel good making progress even if it is little by little.This book is an eye-opener as well as a guide on how you can follow in the author’s footsteps and do your part to reduce your personal waste. Five stars.

I don't know how or when I first learned about Terry's endeavor in trying to get rid of plastic from her life. But one thing for sure, it turns out, we both cried when we saw the images of plastic debris filled dead albatross carcasses; she saw them on Algalita and I saw them on Chris Jordan's Midway: A Message from the Gyre. But unlike me, she set out to do something about it. She boldly decided to get rid of plastic from her life, while I 'try' but still struggle with the endeavor.So it's no surprise that Terry wrote this book so people like you and me, can learn how to do it, without being overwhelmed. This book gives you easy tips to follow with brilliant and quick steps you can do, to get rid of plastic from your daily living. The message I got, and love, from Terry's book is that you don't have to be drastic, like her, to live plastic-free. She acknowledges that it can be hard but she teaches you how we can, by taking little steps to start. And the facts, the directory, exhaustive research she did and shared in the book give you enough information to start and to keep for reference. She did the leg work so we can take the guess work out of our plastic free journey.I especially love how every footnote is referenced. I also love the "rent/borrow/share" directory with links, the difference between silicone and plastic (Good to know she's on the same page as I about silicone), directory of plastic free clothing and accessories...the list goes on.If you don't know how important it is to eliminate plastic from our lives, for our health, for the planet's health, and for the animals' health, then, you definitely should pick up a copy. You can buy this digital version (like I did) or you can preorder the hardcover paper version soon. The paper version of the book is plastic free, packaging is plastic free, and shipping is plastic free - the whole book is compostable afterwards! No glue and no toxic ink was used. Compostable cotton thread was used to bind the book!I think we are worse than the dead albatross in the Gyre. The poor birds couldn't escape plastic that they had nothing to do with, 2000 miles away from us - but we are swimming in plastic every day and dying from the effects.We owe it to our children to eliminate plastic from our lives so they don't end up like the albatross babies, dead with stomach filled with plastic soda caps. And Beth Terry teaches us 'how', with this book.

God I love this book. She explains clearly the myriad of ways in which plastic is awful for our health, our kids, and our planet, but brings us back from the brink of suicide by showing us all the great things that others are doing about it and what we can do as well. She is also very human, funny, and relatable. I am a very normal mother of two, but I was able to implement many of her ideas and am inspired to implement even more. We have reduced our household waste from 1 kitchen trash bag every week to 1 kitchen trash bag every 9 weeks. Onward and upward!

I have made it about 2/3 of the way through it. I found it to be an awesome resource. There is a lot that I have learned and I have used the links to go buy some of the products that she switched to. The turtle and the plastic bag story is sad. I understand the need to bring up the effects of plastic on the environment and animals but that one bothers me.Some of what she recommends isn't that practical but a lot of it is. She has a sort of scale each chapter that gives what you can do that has very easy changes and gradually gets to more difficult. Also she lists some of the restrictions she has ran into. It is nice to have someone explain the pros and cons of the changes. For example many places ban glass water bottles.

I don't love the tiny awkward size of this book (so it can fit in your purse?) but I do love the info! The author is so passionate and it certainly is something that the world needs to be cognizant of. It definitely satisfied the activist in me. I highly recommend it as it's a good comprehensive guide to being more environmentally responsible or even weaning plastic out of your life.

Adult/High School-While her sometimes abusive husband drank away a third of his weekly take-home pay, Evelyn Ryan kept her ever-growing family afloat by entering every contest she came across, beginning with Burma Shave roadside-sign jingles. In post-World War II America, money, appliances, food, excursions-anything you could think of-were routinely offered to the person who sent in the best jingle, essay, or poem, accompanied, of course, by the company's box-top or other product identification. Although she more often won prizes of products, such as a case of Almond Joy candy bars, Mrs. Ryan once won enough for a down payment on a house just as her family was being turned out of their two-bedroom rental house. That contest also won her a bicycle for her son. She entered so many contests, often several times under different forms of her name, that hardly a week went by without some prize being delivered by the postman. Charmingly written by one of her 10 children, this story is not only a chronicle of contesting, but also of her mother's irrepressible spirit. With a sense of humor that wouldn't quit, she found fun in whatever life sent her way, and passed that on to all her children who, despite the poverty they grew up in, lived and still live happy, useful lives. YAs who like family stories should love this winning account.

Her sixth child, San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist Ryan, here recounts how the family depended on her poems, jingles, and contest entries to make ends meet (and sometimes not even). When they must move, Evelyn wins $5000 for a down payment on a house; when their car breaks down, she wins a new one. In addition to her seemingly boundless flow of words is her positive outlook on life, one that her children inherited despite their subsistence on fish sticks and hand-me-down clothes. While readers will root for the family and admire Evelyn's strength and her way with words, in the end the story could have been improved with some judicious editing, especially of the repetitions of the jingles. About the Author
Dwardu Cardona was born, raised, and educated in Malta, Europe, from where he emigrated to Canada in 1959. Less than a year later, in mid-1960, he became involved in the study of catastrophism and the reconstruction of the Solar System's cosmic history. He has, since then, acted as a Contributing Editor for KRONOS and, later, as a Senior Editor for the same periodical, and is currently the Editor of AEON. He was a Founding Father of the Canadian Society for Interdisciplinary Studies (now defunct), and has acted as a consultant on mythology and cosmogony for Chronology and Catastrophism Review, which is the official organ of the British-based Society for Interdisciplinary Studies. He has also acted as the Series Editor for the Osiris Series of books sponsored by Cosmos & Chronos. As a writer, Cardona has now published well over a hundred articles in various periodicals, most of them on the subject covered in the present volume, as well as the book God Star, which forms a prequel to the present work. He has additionally lectured at the University of Bergamo, in Italy, and at various organizations in Canada, the United States, and England.
