Professor M. Shamsuddin had served as Professor and Head of the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at Banaras Hindu University for four decades. He spent three years (June 1978-June 1981) in the United States: one year each at the University of Chicago, University of Utah, Salt Lake City and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge. At MIT, he held the position of a Visiting Associate Professor on invitation from Prof. John F.
