About the Author

Alexander Stepanov studied mathematics at Moscow State University from 1967 to 1972. He has been programming since 1972: first in the Soviet Union and, after emigrating in 1977, in the United States. He has programmed operating systems, programming tools, compilers, and libraries. His work on foundations of programming has been supported by GE, Brooklyn Polytechnic, AT&T,HP, SGI, and, since 2002, Adobe. In 1995 he received the Dr. Dobb’s Journal Excellence in Programming Award for the design of the C++ Standard Template Library.

Paul McJones studied engineering mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1967 to 1971. He has been programming since 1967 in the areas of operating systems, programming environments, transaction processing systems, and enterprise and consumer applications. He has been employed by the University of California, IBM, Xerox, Tandem, DEC, and, since 2003, Adobe. In 1982 he and his coauthors received the ACM Programming Systems and Languages Paper Award for their paper “The Recovery Manager of the System R Database Manager.”

About the Author

Chris Johnson is a Principal Engineer with Nokia Siemens Networks. He has been working in mobile telecommunications for the last 18 years, spending most of this time focused on UMTS. He has been involved with LTE for the last 5 years, providing a range of training sessions and generating various guidelines. This book is a good reference for professionals who would like to have a quick and easy to understand reference of 3GPP's LTE/LTE-Advanced specs. The language is clear and details are well presented. The bullet concept makes the book a great "quick reference", and if you are not very fond of skimming through lots of pages to find something you are looking for, you definitely will like this book.You may get disappointed by the print quality but bear in mind that this book is a "self published" product and that is the reason why you are able to get such a reference for less than 60$. The one purchased from Amazon.com is not a colour print, if you want a colour one check out lulu.com.I would like to see a chapter on Buffer Status Report as there are chapters on other UL control information elements such as Scheduling Request and UL HARQ ACK/NACK reporting. On the other hand, this topic is well documented in 3GPP 36.321 Chapter 5.4.5 - Rel 10.I have another book from the same author. When I first read that book, I liked the "log file representation" of system variables (SIBs, several IEs etc...), but the table approach used in this book is more difficult to read (to me).Lastly, the software which is available on the the book's website -LTE Visualization Tool-, is very useful and deserves a separate appreciation.

Just got this book - 2nd edition. The bullet format makes this a great reference book. It summarizes the LTE 3GPP specifications in bullet form but includes plenty of detail in bullets, tables and figures. Any more detail and you would be reading the spec! It appears to be especially good for those who know LTE but need a quick way to look up details about a particular part of the signal.--Unfortunately, this edition is published in grayscale. The first edition was in color which accentuated detail in a lot of the figures -- especially in figures related to resource element allocation to the different physical signals and channels. The figures are fair in grayscale but the color version was alot better. I needed the latest release for the LTE Release 10 updates so I needed to get this edition. I do not know if a color version of the 2nd edition is available. If so, get that one.--I highly recommend it to LTE engineers and developers.

This is a great book if you want to learn about LTE technology. This is not an introductory book, but if you know some basics of networks, MAC protocols, FDMA and CDMA, this book will fill you in -- to whatever level of detail you want. It is great about giving you the hard details, and in some places the reason for doing it that way, but with a minimum of fluff. Of course, every other word is an acronym, but there's a glossary in the front of the book, and you can learn them pretty quickly. Features introduced in LTE advanced are called out where they occur.

I've read a few explanations of LTE and boy...can it get confusing. This book really does a splendid job of organizing and explaining topics in the very jungle-esque world of Telecom. It sort of comes at you from some assumed knowledge, but it's a very good book. A bit pricey honestly, but should be required reading for us telecom workers/geeks!

The content of the book is good, but I'd recommend looking for the color edition instead. There are sections where the color edition differentiates different pieces of data by color and this edition uses the exact same shade of grey for all of those pieces, which loses some important detail. There are some other pages where thin lines print legibly in the color edition but do not even print in this edition.

This book is the best reference you can find on LTE. It is a good option not only for beginners but also for experienced engineers. It is very concise. If you need to explore a topic further, the book refers to the specifications where you can look.

Whether it's an interview you are reading for or wanting to understand a specific feature or a concept this book clearly has established itself as an industry standard reference in the field of LTE. Chris Johnson has broken down each concept step by step by going through the multiple chained references that exists while reading the 3GPP specifications, so that you don't have to, unless you need to verify. Relevant pictorial representations, call flows, contents of messages and much more are used befittingly to help explain the various features and concepts in bullets, staying true to its title.
